Dear Friends,
As a result of low ticket sales, we are unfortunatly going to have to cancel our in-person Tilden PROM event. We are sad to miss an opportunity to gather together and catch-up on the happenings of kids and families and friends. We hope, nonetheless, to share news and engage a conversation with the Tilden community – Past, Present and Future and hope that you will consider continuing to support Tilden School.
Acknowledging that philanthropy was not part of the equation of Tilden Past, as we double-down on the values and standards of both the educational experience and values of the School, there is a financial dimension to be considered in light of its Present and Future that includes an opportunity for philanthropy. Aside from mundane accounting and a simple reality – Seattle is an expensive city in which to run a business and employ talented people who do amazing work – there is a distinctly value-driven element at its root.
And it is this: I would wish the educational experience of my children, for any child. As a parent, there wasn’t a single day that my daughters did not want to go to school. Did I recognize how valuable that was, as it was happening? Did I really have an understanding that their teachers not only valued the imperative of early childhood education in principle, but my child’s development, progression, and well-being, as well? Did I notice that as I was dropping them off and picking them up each day, that the foundational skills and confidence they acquired would ripple through each day of their education, thereafter? I did not.
In looking back, and in continuing to prepare my daughters for the future, I have a just few pieces of advice for them, one of which is to prepare to be as many things as you can be: an artist, a scientist, a poet, a writer, a mathematician, an orator, a storyteller, a historian, a critical thinker, and – most of all, a kind person and good friend. I know they are capable of doing so because this began when they were 5 years old, showing up in that parking lot each day for school.
In managing Tilden Present, the transition is not without its challenges (as any Kindergarten teacher will tell you, transitions are hard). Before the GOAT acronym existed, and before exceptional people were called multi-hyphenate, there was Whitney Tjerendsen. She is, in so many ways, both of these monikers, as well as truly irreplaceable. But what she created and built with modesty, determination, dedication and an incredibly strong will, remains a special place – where we are working to sustain and enrich the opportunity for the next wave of 5-year-olds that will show up in the parking lot on Monday morning.
In closing, we hope you will join us in supporting an opportunity for philanthropy that honors the Past, sustains the Present, and enables the Future of Tilden School.
